Artist Kathy Long’s pastels and black & white drawings of the people and culture of Hawaii are seen as some of the most accurate and sensitive contemporary works available today. The inspiration for the image is from the Halau O’Ke Kuhi, a halau that takes liberties in their design and costuming. Every April, the Merrie Monarch festival takes place at the Edith Kanakeole Stadium named after the mother of the two sisters, Nalani and Pua who frequently judge the competition. Their Halau, O’Ke,Kuhi is the only halau allowed to dance closest to the volcano where Kathy took her inspiration for this lovely work of art transformed into accessories for you to enjoy.
