| Frank MacIntosh was commissioned during Hawaii’s Golden Years of the 1930’s by the Matson Shipping Company to produce several romantic scenes that would depict Hawaii during this period. These highly stylized art deco designs were used as covers for the menus used aboard the company’s popular ocean liners. They were also produced for special events such as fashion shows and other Hawaiian promotions.Later, MacIntosh’s art would find additional use in print material produced to promote Hawaii as a travel destination.Perhaps more than that of any other artist, MacIntosh’s work is collected and treasured as being synonymous with vintage Hawaiiana. It embodies Hawaii’s romantic lure during the time when visitors undertook voyages on Matson Line’s S.S. Lurline or S.S. Matsonia.
